Cardiology is a specialty of internal medicine and deals with cardiovascular diseases and its diagnosis, screening, therapy and prevention. The senior physician occupies a management position in a clinic in a German hospital or a medical care centre. The chief physician and the clinic management are superior to him or her. The medical specialists and assistant physicians are subordinate to him or her. It is also the responsibility of a senior physician to mediate communication with the nursing staff.
Specialised expertise and a capacity for leadership and communication are therefore necessary to successfully fill this position. Skills that can be targeted through our search. Cardiology is a specialty of internal medicine. In Germany, a physician usually receives this title after 6 years of specialisation as an internist, with the title "Specialist for Internal Medicine and subspecialty Cardiology". After that, he or she can specialise even further. Possible specialties include heart failure or interventional cardiology.
There are efforts to establish cardiology as an independent sub-specialty. This would set it apart from internal medicine as well as surgery. After all, cardiology is not cardiac surgery.
Nevertheless, cardiology is also becoming increasingly interventional (with an intervention by catheter technique). In a cardiac catheterization laboratory, for example, a plastic tube is guided through vessels to the heart with the aid of contrast medium and an X-ray image. This allows diseases of the heart, the heart chambers and coronary vessels to be diagnosed and treated. A stent (vascular support) can be placed through the same access for this purpose. A bypass (bridging of the vessel) is placed in open-heart surgery and falls within the scope of cardiac surgery. The therapy chosen must be considered on an individual basis. AI (artificial intelligence) will make it easier to predict the most effective therapy in the future. However, the diagnosis of a senior physician is irreplaceable.
Cardiology examinations that take place without intervention include ECG (electrocardiogram), cardiac ultrasound (echocardiography) or stethoscope. Laboratory testing may also be appropriate. Senior physicians are experienced enough to know and recommend appropriate therapies. In contrast to the chief physician, he/she has a lot of time to work on patients, because the administrative workload is even less.
To be able to assess and treat the diversity of each heart, a senior physician has acquired many skills.
